Government to assess remand overcrowding – Biman

Listen to this article:

GOVERNMENT will assess the overcrowding issue in remand facilities, as the Fiji Police Force ramps up its operations on hard drugs says Acting Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad.

“We are strengthening our border controls and our police force,” he said.

“Government is also taking the bull by the horns.”

In a statement earlier this year, Fiji Corrections Services warned that overcrowding had overwhelmed its capacity to provide adequate healthcare, mental health support, food and accommodation for inmates.

Prof Prasad was also quick to dismiss critics who accuse the Government of blaming its predecessors.

“You see, there is one politician who’s not even in Parliament who thinks we are blaming the previous government,” he said.

He said there have been lapses everywhere and Government has been addressing the issue.

However, he said it was going to take time but resources would be allocated if needed.

“Government will assess the situation, and if there is a need to provide additional funding to cater for the increased number of inmates.”
