MINISTER for Home Affairs and National Federation Party member Pio Tikoduadua says the Republic of Fiji Military Forces deserves recognition for their role in upholding democracy and respecting the outcome of the 2022 General Election.

Mr Tikoduadua said at the NFP convention held in Labasa yesterday that the RFMF had demonstrated maturity and professionalism in challenging circumstances.

“Despite the challenges they’ve faced, we recognise that the commander in particular, and the force as a whole, have acknowledged the will of the people through the ballot box.”

Mr Tikoduadua said this was one of the force’s most significant achievements.

“They have stood tall, and I continue to acknowledge their commitment, especially considering the threats they faced personally in 2022 and 2023,” he said.

“They were able to go through that without any major problems. That’s essentially what I was saying – I want to acknowledge their role in doing so.”

Mr Tikoduadua said the National Security Strategy outlined how the RFMF sees itself in the future and defined its understanding of its role in a democratic Fiji.

He said this included respect for civilian leadership and democratic processes.

“Through the National Security and Defence Review, which took place over two years, we addressed those concerns,” he said.

“The National Security Strategy now puts that into perspective.”

He said the RFMF played a key role in developing the NSS and commended their engagement.

“One of the best things about this process was how deeply involved the RFMF was examining our past, evaluating our present, and ensuring stability in our national security moving forward.

Mr Tikoduadua said rebuilding trust was a big challenge of the RFMF.

“They’ve clearly articulated and demonstrated their commitment through the NSS, and this is something we should all support going forward.”

He said national security must be viewed as a collective responsibility.

“Our security is a shared responsibility,” he said.

“We need to strengthen our unity moving forward. This isn’t a one-time effort it’s ongoing, and for sustainable outcomes, we all need to work on it together.”
