In a major achievement for women’s healthcare in Fiji, the country’s first laparoscopic hysterectomy has been successfully performed at the Aspen Medical-managed Lautoka Hospital.
This has been announced by Aspen Australia.
Laparoscopic hysterectomy is an operation done to remove a uterus through small incisions in the abdomen. The procedure is done due to several gynecological cancers and for benign gynecological conditions like endometriosis and uterine fibroids
The procedure, which marks a new era in advanced surgical care for Fijian women, was carried out through a collaboration between the Australian/NZ–Fiji Endoscopy Group, the Oceania Pacific Health Association (OPHA), Fiji’s Ministry of Health & Medical Services, Fiji National University, and Aspen Medical.
The surgery was led by Dr Temalesi Windust, with critical support from Dr Nanise Sikiti and Dr Sailosi Ratumaitavuki of the Aspen Medical Obstetrics and Gynaecology team at Lautoka Hospital.
Visiting endoscopy experts worked alongside local surgical teams to successfully deliver the procedure, which offers patients reduced recovery time, lower risk of infection, and less postoperative pain compared to traditional surgery.
Aspen Australia said this is a proud moment for the nation and a testament to what we can achieve through collaboration and commitment to improving health outcomes for Fijian women.
