Powerhouse and transformers damaged in Ba mill fire

A complete power failure at the Rarawai Mill occurred during the recent fire, Fiji Sugar Corporation has confirmed.

In a statement released yesterday, FSC management said the mill’s 24/7 electrical fire pump system, designed to supply water for cooling and fire suppression across the facility, was rendered inoperable when the fire knocked out the power supply.

“During the incident, the powerhouse and transformers were damaged, resulting in a full power blackout,” the statement read.

“This unfortunately rendered the electrical fire pump inoperable, which hindered the mill’s ability to use its internal fire line immediately.”

Despite the equipment setback, FSC said the mill’s emergency protocol was promptly activated, with mill management contacting the National Fire Authority (NFA) and coordinating with local contractors to provide water tankers.

“At no point was there chaos,” FSC clarified.

“The response was carried out under the mill’s safety procedures and in close coordination with NFA.”

No injuries or fatalities were reported during the incident, and the fire was eventually brought under control.

FSC also addressed reports suggesting confusion during the firefighting efforts, including claims that staff were searching for irrigation hoses.

“These claims are misleading,” the management said.

“In reality, management attempted to connect river water to fire trucks during the brief period when NFA tankers were refilling, to ensure continuous firefighting support.”

The corporation reiterated that responsibility for municipal fire hydrants lies with local councils, not with FSC.

FSC concluded by praising the joint efforts of its staff, the NFA, and contractors for preventing further damage and ensuring everyone’s safety.

“We are grateful that no lives were lost and remain committed to continuously improving our emergency preparedness,” the statement said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the National Fire Authority.
