Fiji experienced one of its wettest years in recent history, with the national average rainfall for 2024 reaching 3040mm making it the 6th wettest year in 67 years of recorded data, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service’s Annual Climate Summary.
Despite the significant rainfall in 2024, the long-term national rainfall trend from 1958 to 2024 shows no statistically significant increase or decrease, though large year-to-year variations continue, primarily due to El Niño and La Niña events.
Out of 23 rainfall monitoring stations across the country, 17 recorded above-normal rainfall, while the remaining six reported near-normal totals. Months of January, February, March, November, and December saw rainfall well above average due to a series of active troughs and tropical disturbances.
The wettest locations in 2024 were Monasavu (5791mm), Nadarivatu (4997mm), Navua (4371mm) and Laucala Bay (Suva) – 3993mm.
The driest locations in 2024 were Levuka (1253mm), Vanuabalavu (1878mm), Ono-i-Lau (1890mm) and Momi (1974mm).
