THE Government is taking a strategic step to modernising its struggling sugar industry by exploring the possibility of a new state-of-the-art sugar mill.
Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry Charan Jeath Singh is meeting global sugar mill suppliers in Cali, Colombia, as part of Fiji’s broader sugar industry modernisation program.
The Minister and his permanent secretary Dr Vinesh Kumar held discussions with engineering firms known for modernising mills in Asia, Africa and Latin America, including Uttam Group (India), ULKA Industries, and Five Group.
“Our Government is committed to revitalising Fiji’s sugar industry,” Mr Singh said.
“Establishing a new mill with the latest technology is a strategic step toward increasing efficiency, lowering costs and ensuring sustainability.
“These discussions with global leaders in mill construction are vital for us to make the right decision for Fiji’s future,” he said.
Mr Singh said the initiative sought to rebuild confidence in the industry, create rural employment, and strengthen the country’s export base by embracing innovation and global best practices.
