TEN schools in Nadi and Lautoka have been singled out for the establishment of composting centres.
The compositing campaign, led by Pacific Recyclers Foundation and Recycle Organics with funding from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, aims to reduce methane emissions through sustainable organic waste management by engaging more than 2500 students and staff to lead the project.
At the launch at Nadi Sangam Primary School, Education Minister Aseri Radrodro said he hoped the project would have positive impacts, not only on the schools but on their nearby communities through the students and teachers.
“This initiative aims to pilot and expand organic recycling and composting programs in 10 schools beginning with the pilot school at Nadi Sangam Primary School,” Mr Radrodro said.
“These moments give me hope and remind me that our young people are not waiting for tomorrow. They are ready to act today.
“It is about ensuring waste is never wasted and that every piece of organic waste can return to earth at no risk to gardens, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and in the process enable us to live in harmony with nature.”
Mr Radrodro said the campaign also aligned with the ministry’s strategy to prepare children for the challenges of the 21st century.
PRF founder and director Amitesh Deo said the program would help shape mindsets and behaviour.
“This project plants the seed for long-term change,” he said.
“By starting in schools, we are creating a culture of waste responsibility and climate action that will extend into households and communities across Fiji.”
