Tiare Colavoli is a nurse at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital who will shed her scrubs this weekend as a queen contestant at this weekend’s FMF Hibiscus Festival.

Sponsored by Leleuvia Island Resort, the 23-year-old Kadavu lass wants people to know that practices of climate resilience were observed by our forefathers.

“I will advocate on the importance of marine conservation that our grandfathers and forefathers observed during their time,” Ms Colavoli said.

“They used to have qoliqoli tabu (marine taboo) in which they didn’t allow villagers to fish in a certain qoliqoli area.

“They didn’t allow burning of bushes but wanted people to look after the forest and their plantations, so it’s not new. I just need to reiterate the importance of these issues.”

Ms Colavoli said there needed to be more awareness about these issues as pollution continued to affect our environment.

“Let’s just not talk about it. Let’s act on it so I want to take this opportunity to promote that and work with communities to make this happen.

“This festival will benefit myself too as I will learn more about the event, its purpose and how can I, as a contestant, contribute to make an impact.

“I love reading books especially criminal novels and love hanging around with friends and loved ones.”

Keeping healthy and fit are other activities she lives by.
