EASTERN division bowlers are headed to the upcoming Pineapple Cup with the aim of starving the western division off the top prize.
Suva Bowling Club member Dan Lum On said the western-based players had dominated the national pairs earlier this month and the aim is to keep the coveted Pineapple Cup in the east.
“Now the east teams are trying really hard to win this tournament so that we can keep the trophy here. We celebrated our 100 years this year so that is already done so we are trying to rest away from the western division players most of the national tournaments. That is our aim this year,” he said.
Last Saturday, players from the Suva Bowling club conducted social bowls to prepare them for the biggest national annual competition this weekend.
The Pineapple Cup has always boasted a top roster of bowlers from around the country and Lum On is expecting the same this year.
“All the 10 clubs from around Fiji will be converging here to try and win that prestigious cup. It is one of the oldest tournaments in the country and that’s why all the top guns will be here.
“It has been 60 something that this competition has been running for and it has always drawn the best out of the best in the country.”
Sai Walker and Semesa Naiseruvati are the defending champions of the Pineapple Cup in the women and men’s categories.
