THE Education Ministry will review school safety protocols across the country to strengthen measures that protect students, staff and communities.
Education Minister Aseri Radrodro made this remark in response to a tragic incident last Friday where a child died after a school gate fell on her.
According to reports received from the school principal, the child was travelling with her father when she was asked to open the gate, an access point for teachers living in the school compound.
“This tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of the need for continued vigilance in safeguarding the welfare of children in and around our schools,” Mr Radrodro said.
“We will also be reviewing school safety protocols across the country to strengthen measures that protect our students, staff, and communities.
“On behalf of the ministry and the Government of Fiji, I extend heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the school community, and all those touched by this devastating loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this time of deep sorrow.”
In a statement, the ministry said the school gate was installed in 2023 and had been in good working condition until the unforeseen event.
“It has been in daily use since its installation. The Education Minister acknowledges the swift response of the school chaplain, who has been providing spiritual comfort to the family, and the counsellors who have been engaged since Friday evening to deliver psychological support.
“As part of the ministry’s support for infrastructure maintenance, 20 per cent of the Free Education Grant is allocated to schools for building upkeep. In addition, all schools are required to operate Occupational Health and Safety committees, tasked with monitoring compliance and the safety of facilities.”
