Youths of three communities in Serua took the initiative to organise the Wainiyabia Clean-Up Campaign on Friday.
The clean-up involving the youths, government officials and villagers cleared litter from the Wainiyabia Village beachfront.
Youth leader Elena Tonitonivanua said with more than 40 members, the youth group organised the clean-up after noticing the large volume of litter found along the popular picnic spot.
She said it was a concern for their village and the nearby communities of Kalekana, Waidradra and Bilo.
“We hope that after this clean-up, people will be more mindful of where they dump their rubbish — to please not use the beach as a place to throw their rubbish,” Ms Tonitonivanua said.
Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Sakiusa Tubuna commended the youth group.
Mr Tubuna said there was a need for the public to be empowered to leading initiatives that benefited their people.
