Fiji Chess to host Rapid tourney

The Fiji Chess Federation is set to host its September Rapid Tournament today, at the University of the South Pacific’s Laucala Campus in Suva.

The event will take place in Room 019 – 104A & B, running from 8:00am to around 5:30pm.

The tournament will follow a 7-round rapid format, with a 15 minutes + 5 seconds increment time control, ensuring fast-paced, thrilling matches throughout the day.

The event is open to all players, from seasoned competitors to enthusiastic newcomers, making it a true celebration of chess in Fiji.

Registration will be held from 8:00am to 8:30am on the morning of the event.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Fiji Chess Federation President, Hilda Kunau, said the September Rapid Tournament is an important fixture in the Federation’s calendar.

“We are excited to welcome players of all levels to this weekend’s Rapid Tournament. Rapid chess is dynamic and highly competitive, and we expect to see both rising talents and experienced players showcase their skills,” said Kunau.

She added that the event reflects the Federation’s mission of expanding the sport’s reach.

“Chess in Fiji continues to grow, and events like this provide a platform for young players to test themselves in a competitive environment while also encouraging wider community participation. We want to make chess accessible, fun, and inspiring for everyone.”

Meanwhile, the registrations will be held from 8:00am to 8:30am on the morning of the event.

The Fiji Chess Federation encourages families, friends, and chess enthusiasts to come along and support the event.
