At just 23 years old, Monish Kumar embodies the spirit of passion, dedication, and cultural pride as he balances a promising career with a heartfelt devotion to music.
Residing at Farm Road, Nakasi, Monish’s roots trace back to Waiqele, Nabekavu in Labasa, where he was raised in a close-knit family that nurtured his love for singing from a very young age.
“I was brought up in Nabekavu village surrounded by family, and it was there that my love for music began,” Monish recalled fondly.
“I started singing at the age of 10, and my father, Manoj Kumar, who is also my guru, has always been my biggest inspiration and supporter.
“My uncle (kaka), Sanjeet Kumar also played a big role in encouraging me.”
His musical journey took off during his primary school days when he performed at Narere Primary School.
That early experience on stage fueled a passion that would soon broaden, even taking him as far as New Zealand for kirtan performances.
Over the years, Monish has participated in over 50 kirtan stage shows across Fiji—events ranging from weddings to funeral rituals and various religious functions.
“I love singing kirtans, bhajans, Lokgeets, ghazals, sufi songs, and Bollywood hits.”
“Music is not just a hobby but a spiritual calling for me. Through my songs, especially devotional ones, I feel connected to something bigger, and it gives me purpose.”
Beyond his voice, Monish is a specialist in traditional instruments such as the hudda-tasa — played during weddings — and the dafla, a drum used in pooja ceremonies.
His mastery of these instruments complements his vocal performances and enriches the cultural tapestry of every event he takes part in.
While music holds a special place in his heart, Monish has pursued a well-rounded education.
He attended Nabekavu Primary School and completed his secondary education at Bhawani Dayal Arya College in Nakasi.
Determined to build a stable career alongside his musical interests, he enrolled at Fiji National University’s Samabula Derrick Campus, graduating in automotive engineering.
“Education was important to me and my family.
“I wanted to have a career where I could support myself and my dreams.”
Graduating in automotive engineering opened doors, but I never wanted to lose touch with my music.”
Today, Monish works as a truck driver for Viti Fresh while also drawing on his knowledge of sales and marketing to manage and promote his musical projects.
Juggling work, studies, and his music is no easy feat, but Monish approaches it with discipline and passion.
“My biggest challenge has been managing my time—taking time off work to perform and rehearse, and building a strong bond with my fellow musicians in the Radhe Radhe Bhakti Boys Group.
“It’s a constant balancing act, but music brings me joy and keeps me motivated.”
He credits teamwork and dedication as critical factors in growing the group, which has become an important part of his musical journey.
“We’ve built a strong connection, and that’s what makes our performances special.
“It’s not just about music; it’s about sharing a message and a feeling with our audience.”
Looking toward the future, Monish aspires to become a professional musician and a sensational performer at musical events across Fiji and beyond.
His vision transcends personal success—he sees music as a force for unity and change in society.
“To my friends and everyone who has supported my music, I want to say that music is deeply spiritual.
“It has the power to bring people together, to heal, and to transform lives.
“Music doesn’t discriminate; it connects people of all races and backgrounds. That’s the true beauty of it.”
Monish’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of cultural roots.
“From the quiet streets of Waiqele, Nabekavu to stages across Fiji and New Zealand, his journey reflects a commitment to honouring tradition while embracing new opportunities.
“My father always told me, ‘Stay true to your music and your values,’ and that has guided me every step of the way.
“I want to keep spreading joy, faith, and hope through my songs, wherever life takes me.”
With his vocal talent, instrumental skills, and dedication to his craft, Monish Kumar is poised to make a lasting impact on Fiji’s music scene, inspiring others to follow their dreams while staying grounded in their heritage.
