The National Council for People with Disabilities (NCPD) has launched initiatives to create clearer pathways for employment and improved accessibility for persons with disabilities.
According to Nina Tokadavou, Initiative Lead for the council’s job discovery program, several key programs have been introduced to advance disability rights in Fiji.
“We have a new job discovery program, which is an employment transition program linking young adults with disabilities to employment opportunities,” she said.
The council is also involved in conducting accessibility audits for new infrastructure, an initiative integrated into the national building code following their advocacy efforts.
“We’ve been thankful our recommendations were included as part of the process.”
Additionally, the council collaborates with the Ministry of Housing on a housing retrofitting program aimed at modifying homes to better support persons with disabilities, enabling greater mobility within their own residences.
Beyond infrastructure, Ms Tokadavou emphasised the importance of community outreach and awareness campaigns carried out by the council and its affiliated disability organisations.
“We encourage community and grassroots participation, bringing awareness sessions right down to the community level. That’s where you get all the information and ensure all members participate.”
The council also engages women’s groups, youth groups and other organisations in the policy-making process, including budget submissions, fostering inclusive dialogue and decision-making.
“When you involve everyone, you ensure they are included in the circle. Not only do you begin with them, but you also end the consultation process with them.
“This ensures they understand the importance of participating in policy and dialogue sessions.”
