THE gathering of hundreds of devotees for Ganesh Visarjan — as they bid farewell to Lord Ganesh — highlighted our nation’s capacity to unite in celebration of religion and traditions, bringing Fiji together in every possible way.
These were the words of Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad at My Suva Picnic Park on Saturday, where members chanted “Ganpati Bappa Morya” during the ceremony.
Colourful processions animated the park, signifying the conclusion of Ganesh Utsav.
Mr Prasad emphasised Government was dedicated to fostering freedom and understanding among citizens.
“Our Government is committed to bringing freedom and that understanding amongst our people, and we condemn any attempts or any idea that the Government is not aware of the need for unity, inclusiveness, and understanding of our diverse cultures, languages, religions, and traditions,” Mr Prasad said.
“The fact that we are all gathered here to celebrate this very important, auspicious occasion shows our history, our ability as a country, as a people to come together to celebrate, to practice our religion, understand our traditions, and unite this country in every particular way.
“You are providing the service not only to those who are Hindus, but you are providing this opportunity for education, for knowledge, for wisdom that brings not only our families together, our communities together, but also brings our country together.”
