Marathon sparks the capital

THE Queen Elizabeth Drive in Suva was filled with dedicated runners for the Suva Marathon yesterday.

The marathon was partaken in by representatives of corporate houses and athletic enthusiasts.

It was the culmination of meticulous planning and the continuous efforts by all participants to be up to par with the demands of the race.

The marathon was carried out in four different races and sponsored by Suva law firm Munro Leys and Rexona.

In the Munro Leys Suva Marathon event that began at 6am, runners participated in a 42.2km race that began and ended on Cakobau Road behind the Albert Park pavilion.

In the half marathon event, also sponsored by Munro Leys, it began at 6.15am on the other side of the park at Constitution Avenue where runners ran the length of the road and turned outward onto Victoria Parade.

From there, they continued onto Queen Elizabeth Drive in a 4.5 km run where participants returned Avenue via Cakobau Road and repeated a loop twice around Albert Park before the race finished at the Albert Park pavilion.

The Rexona Team Marathon began at 7.15am when runners took off from the Suva Bowling Club and ran along Queen Elizabeth Drive before returning to the finish line via Cakobau Road, with a complete loop of Albert Park before its finish at the pavilion.

The race was run in teams of four for 10.55km.

The 10km road race, also sponsored by Rexona, began at 7am at the Suva Bowling Club.

Meanwhile, during the various races, members of the Salvation Army were also present to share information about their work and collect donations.

They were also stationed around Albert Park collecting donations for their annual street appeal.
