THE 2025 McDonald’s Inter-District Championship concluded in Ba yesterday with four new champions crowned after three days of thrilling youth football at the Fiji FA Academy grounds.

The spotlight shone on Dreketi as their U14 girls lifted the title, defeating Seaqaqa 2-1 in the final to claim the crown. The Vanua Levu side showcased determination and skill, underlining their growing presence in youth football.

In the U14 boys’ division, Nadi proved too strong, sealing a 3-1 victory over Rewa to be crowned champions.

Suva maintained their dominance in the U12 boys’ grade, edging Dreketi 1-0 in a tightly contested final.

The U10 boys’ final provided the most drama of the day, with Lautoka holding off a late fightback to defeat Nadi 4-3 at the Fiji FA futsal court. The Blues raced to a 4-0 lead through Justin Naidu, Mohammed Ayan and a double from Anasa, before Nadi hit back with three goals from Arjun Mudaliar and Sowane Ratulevu. Despite the late surge, Lautoka held firm to clinch the title.

Lautoka coach Rijay Naidu said his players’ hard work paid off.

“I am very proud of the boys’ performance in the tournament. They really showed their true spirit and it’s all because of the support of the parents. The boys have given us back exactly what we wanted.

“We started our preparation two weeks ago, getting used to the turf and the boys have given us back exactly what we wanted,” Naidu said.

Nadi coach Yoki Salvin praised the team’s fightback despite the loss.

“We were just unlucky. The boys came back into the match but unfortunately it was too late. Still, they really played well and it’s a good learning experience for us,” Salvin said.

Fiji FA technical director David Baltase congratulated all participating teams, noting the importance of the IDC in player development.

“This tournament has once again shown the depth of talent across our districts. It’s not just about winning trophies but giving young players the opportunity to perform at a high level and be identified for future pathways.

“The energy and support from families and communities made it a true festival of football,” Baltase said.

The McDonald’s IDC wrapped up with more than 40 teams and nearly 500 players from 10 districts taking part, cementing its role as one of the most important grassroots tournaments on Fiji’s football calendar.
