The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is calling on all hotels, resorts, commercial marinas, and coastal establishments offering water-based recreational activities to comply with national maritime laws by obtaining proper certification.
In a public notice issued by Chief Executive Officer Joweli Cawaki, MSAF reminded operators that marine recreational activities such as jet skiing, kayaking, snorkeling tours, paddleboarding, and banana boat rides are regulated under the Maritime Transport Act 2013 and the Maritime (Jet Ski and Recreational Boat) Regulations 2014.
“Any individual, entity, or establishment conducting marine recreational activities must obtain a Certificate of Compliance from MSAF,” said Mr Cawaki.
“This requirement is not optional, it is a legal obligation to ensure the safety of operators, guests, and our marine environment.”
According to MSAF, certification is essential to ensure the safe operation of all marine-based recreational activities, minimise accidents and mishaps involving guests and operators, enforce compliance with Fiji’s maritime safety laws and safeguard lives, property, and the marine ecosystem.
MSAF is urging operators to act without delay.
“All relevant operators are required to send in their applications for certification to the Authority at the earliest opportunity.”
“Failure to comply with the Maritime (Jet Ski and Recreational Boat) Regulations 2014 may result in penalties, including the suspension or cancellation of existing certifications.”
