A PUBLIC consultation on the review of the Police Act of 1965 saw just one attendee at the Friendly North Inn venue in Labasa.

Consultant David Solvalu described the attendance as disappointing.

“This is a rare opportunity for the public to influence the law that governs a body they will almost certainly interact with in their lives,” he said.

Mr Solvalu encouraged the public to participate in the consultation while they still could.

“If you don’t contribute, you’re trusting the process to protect your interests without your voice,” he said.

He said focused consultations have already taken place with NGOs, civil society organisations and statutory bodies.

“Now it’s time for the broader public to contribute.

“If people choose not to engage, we assume you trust that the process will still deliver outcomes that serve the public interest.”

The public consultation period ends this month.

“After that, a report and draft Bill will be submitted to Cabinet and its subcommittees.” If approved, Mr Solvalu said a Bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament, possibly in November or December.
