The Fiji Government, through the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs, is leveraging its Multi-Ethnic Grant Program to fund grassroots projects that directly improve the dignity and well-being of local communities in Rakiraki.

A recent grant of $8766.25 for new washroom facilities at the Ra Christian Cemetery in Rakiraki highlights the program’s focus on practical needs that were previously a source of inconvenience and discomfort for mourners.

Cemetery president Praveen Ramswarup said the grant had addressed a long-awaited need for the community.

The grant funded the construction of new washroom facilities for families and mourners.

Mr Ramswarup said the project was a long-awaited need for the community. He also noted the difficulties previously faced by people attending funerals.

“For a long time, people faced difficulties during funerals as there were no convenience facilities available,” he said.

“Mourners, including women and children, often had to travel back to town or to nearby homes to use a washroom during services, which was very inconvenient.”

Mr Ramswarup also said the cemetery served a broader purpose beyond the Christian community of Rakiraki, as it was also used by people from other districts.

”Funeral services usually take hours, with prayers and preaching, and people travel from far places.

“Having a washroom facility here will make a big difference, especially for women and children. We are very grateful to the minister and the Government of the day for their support.”

Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry Charan Jeath Singh said the project reflected the government’s commitment to supporting communities with practical needs that improved lives.

He added the Multi-Ethnic Grant Program ensures no community is left behind, with access to essential facilities that align with the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs is continuing to implement projects under the program to ensure equitable access to essential services for all communities across Fiji.
