Rewa Football Club’s consistent midfielder, Tevita Waranivalu, has been named the captain of the Fiji men’s national football team for the 51st King’s Cup Challenge in Thailand.
Waranivalu takes over from former captain Roy Krishna, who is sidelined due to injury.
The squad announcement and presentation took place at the Fiji FA Academy in Ba, where the team also celebrated the birthday of their former captain, Krishna, showcasing the strong bond within the Bula Boys camp.
Waranivalu expressed his pride and honor at leading the team in Thailand, stating that wearing the armband not only represents leading the players on the field but also symbolises representing every Fijian who believes in them.
He acknowledged the sacrifices made by players’ families, recognising their unwavering support as integral to the team’s success.
Waranivalu called on his teammates to believe in themselves and emphasised that the team’s journey is a collective effort that includes every player, official, and supporter.
Looking ahead to their opening match, Waranivalu said the Bula Boys were determined to carry the nation’s pride with them.
“When we walk onto that field in Thailand, we carry more than just a ball and a jersey — we carry the hopes of our nation. We will do everything we can to fly our flag high.”
He added a message for the next generation of players:
“I want every young boy and girl in Fiji to know that dreams are possible. I started where many of them are today, and now I have this opportunity. Work hard, believe, and never stop chasing your dreams.”
Coach Marika Rodu emphasised that the tournament is about more than just results but also serves as a test of Fiji’s depth and as an opportunity for young players to measure themselves at a higher level.
He underscored the significance of discipline and teamwork, highlighting the team’s heart and determination as their strengths.
The national squad has departed yesterday, for Bangkok where they will face Thailand in the opening match on September 7.
