PM Rabuka meets Indian President, reinforces Fiji–India friendship

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka met with the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi yesterday, as part of his official visit to India.

Ministry of External Affairs, India said in a statement during the talks, both leaders reaffirmed the long-standing friendship between Fiji and India, underpinned by shared history, people-to-people links, and mutual values.

The Indian President paid tribute to the Girmitiya community and acknowledged their role in shaping Fiji’s multicultural identity and society.

A major highlight of the meeting was the announcement of a memorandum of understanding to establish a Super-Speciality Hospital in Fiji, a significant development in boosting the country’s healthcare capacity.

President Murmu described it as a milestone in the two countries’ shared vision for better healthcare access and cooperation.

President Murmu reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s development, particularly in health, capacity-building, climate resilience, and digital innovation.

She noted that India was ready to assist Fiji with its successful experiences in digital inclusion through systems such as UPI payments, Aadhar ID and Jan Dhan banking.

Prime Minister Rabuka’s visit is seen as a continuation of the growing momentum in Fiji–India bilateral relations.

Both leaders expressed optimism that the visit will lead to new opportunities in trade, technology, education, and development.
