Rugby union professionals gathered at the Upper Hall of the Albert Park pavilion in Suva yesterday for the start of the 2025 Fiji Rugby Union Symposium.

Representatives from various provincial rugby unions, national teams and the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua were present, as the event provided an opportunity for attendees to meet at a location where they could deliberate on ways to continue moving Fiji’s rugby portfolio forward.

FRU chairman John Sanday spoke of the purpose behind the symposium and how it helps align with the union’s intent to bring home the Webb Ellis trophy from the Rugby World Cup.

“I think the main thing is to understand that we’re on this journey to Tier One; that’s the most important thing,” Sanday emphasised.

“We’re going to get there and we’re going to win the World Cup, but this is where the engine room starts.”

FIJI Water Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne said the Fiji Rugby Union’s 2025 Symposium was the foundation of the sport in Fiji.

Byrne said if people knew what the FRU was working towards, then they would also understand what was required at the highest levels of the game with Fiji now considered a Tier One rugby nation.

The symposium continues today and will end on Friday.
