Fiji is ready to be led by a woman.

This was the firm stand taken by FEMLink program manager Elesi Nailati during an interview after she facilitated a session of the Women in Politics workshop held at the Salvation Army in Labasa. Ms Nailati said the country had strong women leaders with the skills and experience to take on the top job.

“There have been an increase presence of women in leadership roles such as chief executive offices and permanent secretaries,” she said. She said women now outnumbered men in tertiary education graduation rates and make up nearly half of Fiji’s population.

“However, there is a need for greater support and awareness, especially when it comes to gender sensitivity in ministries and the wider public. People often resist change, but once they see results, mindsets start to shift.”

When asked whether she saw any current women member of parliament leading the country in the future, she said they all had great potential.

“They are strong, experienced, and they serve with passion.

“I believe all of them are capable and ready.”
