DEPUTY Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica said Fiji and Papua New Guinea can deepen its collaboration in immigration systems and border management.

Mr Kamikamica told those present at the Fiji-PNG Investment Business Forum in Nadi on Thursday that Fiji was currently modernising its immigration services.

“We are adopting an automated, Australia-based platform – similar to the systems already in place in Papua New Guinea and Samoa,” Mr Kamikamica said.

“This upgrade will greatly improve efficiency for travellers and businesses, enhance border security and align our processes with international best practices.

“Here, we see a valuable opportunity for cooperation with Papua New Guinea.

“By sharing lessons, technical expertise and systems interoperability, we can make it easier for our people to travel, trade and invest across our borders.

“In time, our efforts could contribute to a more seamless Melanesian travel experience – one that strengthens connectivity, boosts tourism and labour mobility, and supports the vision of a truly integrated Pacific economy.

“As we look ahead, September 16, 2025 will be a particularly significant milestone, marking both the 50th anniversary of PNG’s Independence and 150 years of historical ties between Fiji and PNG.

“It is with immense pride that I note the Honourable Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, will attend these important commemorative celebrations, further strengthening the bond between our countries.

“Our Government will continue to ensure that Fiji remains an attractive, reliable partner, with a business-friendly environment, transparent policies and open channels for dialogue with the private sector.”
