ABOUT 700 kilograms of litter and debris were collected by staff members and management of InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa during a recent clean-up activity at Natadola Beach, Nadroga.
The initiative is part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ global sustainability program “Journey to tomorrow” and reflects a growing movement towards shared responsibility.
InterContinental Fiji is reinforcing its commitment to protecting the environment that defines the Fijian travel experience at a time when responsible travel is shaping the choices of global travellers.
Regional manager Fiji and Pacific, IHG Hotels and Resorts, Lachlan Walker stated, “Our colleagues see themselves as custodians of Natadola Beach, caring for it not only for our guests but for the local community and future generations”.
Mr Walker said while the beach is enjoyed by many, too much waste was being left behind.
“Collecting over 700 kilograms of litter in one morning shows the scale of the challenge, but also the power of collective action,” he said.
“The solution lies in everyone playing their part.
“We also support Tourism Fiji’s simple call to action — if you ‘can’t bin it, bag it’ and take it home.”
InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa said the clean-up supports Tourism Fiji’s “Bin it or bag it” campaign, which encourages residents and visitors to carry their waste until they can dispose of it properly.
“Just as the Fijian kasikasi (hermit crab) carries its home wherever it goes, the campaign reminds us to treat Fiji as our shared home and take care of it wherever we travel,” a statement from the resort said.
“Beyond large-scale efforts, the resort continues to integrate sustainability into guest and community experiences through ‘Loloma hour’, a weekly program focused on giving back to the environment.
“One weekly initiative, ‘Litter for Latte’, rewards participants who collect a bag of rubbish with a complimentary coffee, turning a simple gesture into a meaningful act of stewardship.”
