WITH the Fijiana XV preparing for their opening 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup clash against Canada tomorrow, the Fiji Water Flying Fijians have sent a strong message of support to their “sisters’ team”.
Speaking after a press conference in Suva on Tuesday, Flying Fijians captain Tevita Ikanivere and flanker Motikiai Murray said the women’s team carried the hopes of the nation as they prepare to take on some of the world’s best in England. Ikanivere said the bond between the two national 15s team was strong and the Fijiana could be assured of the men’s full backing.
“To our Fijiana sisters in England, on behalf of the Flying Fijians management and the boys, we want to wish you all the best in your upcoming games,” he said.
“We hope you do very well, fight for that cup and bring it back to Fiji. Toso Viti Toso.”
Murray echoed his captain’s message, adding that the Fijiana’s sacrifices and dedication inspired many in Fiji, including their brothers in the men’s side.
“We are proud of you all. Play with courage, play with pride and know that Fiji is behind you every step of the way,” Murray said.
The Fijiana XV are in Pool B alongside Canada, Scotland and Wales.
This will be the team’s second World Cup appearance after making their debut in 2022 in New Zealand.
21-year-old Taveuni lass Alfreda Fisher will lead a squad that blends experience with new talent, with several players coming from the Rooster Chicken Fijian Drua Women’s Super Rugby and the Fijiana 7s side. For the Flying Fijians, who are preparing for their own Pacific Nations Cup campaign which will take place next week, sending their good wishes was a way of reminding the women that they were not alone on their World Cup journey.
Meanwhile, the Fijiana XV takes on Canada at 4.30am.
