A farmer convicted of defiling and impregnating his then Year 9 niece on an island in the Lomaiviti Group in 2023 has jailed for 23 months.
The man, who was 22 at the time, had sexual intercourse with the 15-year-old victim in her uncle’s house after a kava session September 9 three years ago.
After the incident, the victim’s menstruation stopped, and her mother noticed she was pregnant in January 2023 before reporting the matter to the police. She gave birth in May 2023.
The man was convicted of defiling a young person between 13 and 16 years of age.
“You did not genuinely love her,” said Acting Justice Waleen George at the High Court in Suva on July 25.
“You only used her to satisfy your lust.” He has 30 days to appeal.
