Four months after its establishment, the Ra Chamber of Commerce and Industry has started mapping out plans to address the frequent flooding of Rakiraki town.
Chamber president Latchman Gounden said he hoped to rope in more stakeholders to assist with the project.
“Once we get this project going, then we want to get involved with NGOs, other embassies, where we can get them in with more knowledge and more technical knowledge to guide us what we can do,” he said.
Mr Gounden said the Rakiraki town centre, Naqoro flats area and the Galau flats were areas prone to flooding during natural disasters.
“So, all these areas get very flooded and that’s due to lack of dredging on the main river.
“What we want to do is get some expertise to see how it can be solved, do we have to create some more low-lying area where the water can go instead of channel through.”
Mr Gounden said he hoped to engage more experts to provide more technical advice on the prospective project.
“So, there’s a whole lot of things, I’m not an expert on that, but we’ll just have to get some more experts and talk to other agencies.
“Once we have all the knowledge of what has to be done, then only we can lobby to the government or lobby to other agencies to see how it can be helped.”
