TELECOM Fiji Limited has rolled out over 500 kilometres of fibre in the last seven years, with plans to deploy a similar length over the next two to three years, says its chief executive officer Charles Goundar.
He revealed this while speaking at the opening of the inaugural Pacific Fiber and Training Conference in Nadi yesterday.
The conference is a joint initiative between Telecom Fiji and the Fibre Network Council to strengthen digital infrastructure and connectivity across the Pacific.
In his speech, Mr Goundar said the conference would focus not only on connectivity but also on what really drives it.
“In the case of Fiji, we have rolled out over 500km of fibre in the past seven years and we are planning a similar rollout in the next two to three years, so connectivity is really the key,” he said.
“We are honored to partner with Fibre Network Council to host this event in Fiji, for the very first time and we encourage you to engage, question, and connect throughout the event.”
Mr Goundar said that speakers at the event would cover developments in emerging areas such as AI, Internet of Things, 5G, satellite technology and cybersecurity.
“At that time, and this being discussed while under a little influence, no one probably thought this was possible.”
Mr Goundar credited a group of talented and hardworking individuals for making the event a reality.
“You all are now part of a tradition,” he said.
