A 24 year old man convicted of stealing items worth $13,000 from a woman’s home has been sentenced to three years in prison with a non-parole period of two years.
Silivo Vueti Kavu, a father-of-one, was found guilty last month of one count of aggravated burglary and theft committed between January 26 and 28 last year.
Court records show Kavu and others broke into the vacant home of Vindu Shandil and stole, among other things, a chest freezer, a television and a home theatre system.
Kavu subsequently sold many of the items, however, some were recovered.
“It was not your property to take,” stated Justice Dane Tuiqereqere while passing sentence in the High Court in Suva on August 7. “You have violated her (Ms Shandil) privacy, and you have violated the security was entitled to feel of her home.”
Kavu has 30 days to appeal.
