Supporters of Gospel High School at the HFC Bank Stadium erupted in celebration at the sight of their school winning 14-12 over Marist Brothers High School in the semi-final of the Deans competition’s under-16 grade yesterday.
Gospel booked their ticket to the final with two tries and fought for domination against an equally-pursuant Marist brigade.
Team manageress Bulewa Tamanisau was in praise of the side’s victory, stating it was the first time the school would appear in the finals this week.
“This is like a big thing for the school, because it’s the first time that we will be reaching the finals,” Tamanisau said.
“And yes, I can’t really describe this (the win), but yes, we are very happy.”
With a strong support system of parents, guardians and students who made their presence known in the stadium with waving flags and passionate cheers, which the manageress also acknowledged.
“The school was behind us, the parents, and the support from the ex-scholars – it was amazing,” she added.
She said the team’s coaches would work with the team on improving areas they faltered in ahead of their appearance in the final.
“The coaches will get to work on the weaknesses from today’s games and from there we’ll be prepared for next week’s game,” she said.
Gospel earned their ticket to the semis yesterday with a 13-10 victory over Queen Victoria School in the quarter-final that took place in the West on Saturday, August 9.
They meet Suva Grammar School in the final next week.
