Moturiki Green, representing the Lomaiviti Netball Club, have made history by securing a spot in the final of the Roses category in the Suva Netball Association competition for the first time.
The team defeated Grasshoppers 10-9 in a tight semi-final match held at the National Netball Centre in Suva yesterday.
Despite heavy rain and slippery court conditions, the young Lomaiviti side showed teamwork to hold on to their narrow lead until the final whistle.
It was a proud moment for the club as this was their first time reaching the final in the Roses grade, which is normally a development category for younger players.
Club secretary Jofiliti Veikoso said the win came as a surprise but was well deserved.
“This is the first time ever for Lomaiviti in the Roses category to reach the final. We’ve always used this grade to teach the girls basic skills and techniques,” Veikoso said.
He credited the team’s coach, Matila Vocea, a former Fiji Pearls player, for the turnaround this season.
Vocea has been training the girls weekly, focusing on discipline, fitness and game strategy.
“Coach Matila has been there with them every week, guiding and mentoring them,” Veikoso added.
He also praised team manager Apenisa Tora for his dedication in ensuring the girls came to training and stayed motivated.
Veikoso said the conditions were tough, but the players adjusted well.
“If the court was dry, they would’ve been running everywhere. But they listened to instructions, took small steps, and played carefully.”
He also acknowledged the strong support from parents and families, many of whom turned up to cheer for the girls despite the rain.
“Having the parents there made a big difference. The cheers and support from the sideline gave the girls that extra push to finish strong.”
The finals will be held next Saturday.
