WATER supply disruptions within Sigatoka Town are paralysing businesses and forcing some of them to suspend their operations indefinitely, says Nadroga Navosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Suresh Naidu.
Mr Naidu made the call to the authorities to treat the issue as a top priority emergency after days of experiencing supply disruptions over the past few weeks.
“This disruption is not just an inconvenience,” said Mr Naidu. “It is crippling our economy and eroding confidence in Sigatoka’s viability as a business hub.
“Every day without resolution deepens losses for employers, employees, and families reliant on these enterprises.”
Mr Naidu said the concerns raised by their members include disruptions to the main public services along the Coral Coast.
“Business operations paralysed in hospitality, agriculture, and retail sectors report significant losses due to their inability to maintain hygiene, operate facilities or serve their customers.
“Livelihoods are at risk, including SMEs, market vendors and tourism operators who face existential threats, with some forced to suspend operations indefinitely.
“And the public health implications include the lack of reliable water, compromising sanitation standards, and raising the risks for communities and visitors alike.”
Mr Naidu said the chamber was willing to support coordinated efforts to address the issue.
“The chamber stands ready to support coordinated efforts and demands daily public updates from the Water Authority on restoration progress, emergency water distribution prioritising high-impact commercial areas and a comprehensive plan to modernise Sigatoka’s water infrastructure.”
