THE Fiji Football U16 boys team departed for the Solomon Islands yesterday for the OFC U16 Men’s Championship.

The side will be led by captain Maikah Lomax Dau, who said he was honoured to represent Fiji once again on the international stage.

“I’m very proud to represent my country once again,” Dau said.

“My message to the team is to apply whatever we have learnt on the field and to keep encouraging one another.”

Speaking to the young players during their farewell on Wednesday, national captain Roy Krishna reminded them of the sacrifices they have made to reach this level of the sport.

“You sacrifice 3am every morning. There is a great bond here, and it will show in Honiara. You play for each other, help each other; it’s about the team, your nation, and your families,” Krishna said.

Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel acknowledged the commitment shown by the players and their families.

“Your parents have sacrificed to get you here, and Fiji FA has also made sacrifices.

“Make sure you carry that enthusiasm with you to achieve your goals,” Patel said.

The U16 boys will aim to secure back-to-back qualifications for the FIFA U17 World Cup when the tournament kicks off in Honiara on Sunday.

Fiji plays Tahiti in their opening match on Sunday.
