Nadi Primary School received a new four-classroom block on Thursday, December 6, 1990.
An article in The Fiji Times on the day said the classrooms were sponsored by an anonymous donor and six charity queens.
The donor gave $10,000 towards the new block while the queens raised $10,500.
Headteacher Satya Deo said the school, which was established in 1969, had expanded rapidly with a multiracial roll of 460 and 13 teachers.
“We see the urgent need to expand further through our own efforts,” Mr Deo said.
“We do not get government help for this type of project.”
When he took over as headteacher in 1985, there were only 220 students. The school roll boomed in 1986-87 which prompted the need for more classrooms.
“Even those two extra classrooms were not enough.
“The school also operates a kindergarten for toddlers in the immediate neighbourhood.”
Mr Deo hailed the efforts of the school community in the charity queen contest where the contestants, sponsored by the kindergarten and Class One, raised $3578.66 to win the contest.
Second was Kirti Avishna Kumar (Classes 2A and 2P) who raised $2288.23, and third was Amanda Sidal, sponsored by Classes 7 and 8 for raising $1538.09.
Mr Deo said the organisers were thankful to Sunflower Airlines, Plantation Island Resort, Bay Cruises (Fiji) Ltd, and South Sea Cruises for providing the main prizes to the winners.
