New portable speed cameras are being deployed across Fiji in a bid to curb the country’s rising road death toll.
Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau made the announcement in Parliament recently.
“This is not a luxury; it is a necessary response to the alarming rate of road deaths, particularly those caused by speeding,” he said.
In 2023, there were 77 road fatalities, 34 from speeding.
As of August 4, 39 people have died on the roads, 23 linked to speeding.
The Land Transport Authority operates 14 fixed cameras rotated across 31 sites and has procured 12 portable units, with five more on the way.
Portable cameras will target high-risk areas and respond to public complaints.
