HEADING back to the drawing board for the FIJI Water Flying Fijians is a key task on the list as the Pacific Nations Cup draws near.

According to head coach Mick Byrne, much consideration will be given to their breakdowns and their control of the ball.

“Well, I think we need to get back and revisit our systems and what we put in place during July,” Byrne said in a press conference yesterday. “I think we improved as we went through from our set piece perspective and will grow in that area.

“I think also our breakdown and controlling the ball is something that we want to really focus in on.”

Byrne shared those sentiments yesterday when the squad for the PNC was named. However, as the team will focus on refining the areas Byrne mentioned, he highlighted their level of defence as an area of strength.

“I thought our defence improved really well. When we look at last year onto this year, I thought our defence in July improved really well,” he said. “But I think our finishing, and controlling the ball when we’re in attacking areas of the field, if we can, if we can, do a better job in that area, I think that will help us.”

The squad assembled for the PNC has a mix of young and experienced players and their inclusion is set to evoke varying displays of performance, agility and strength.

Swire Shipping Fijian Drua players Isoa Tuwai, Tuidraki Samusamuvodre and Taniela Rakuro have been named in the team and may make their Flying Fijians debut in the first match against Tonga on August 30 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

The Flying Fijians squad will march into camp this Saturday.
