Cemeteries misused as drop-off points for contraband, says FCS

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has raised concerns over the misuse of grave plots in some cemeteries as drop-off points for prohibited items intended for inmates.

In a statement, the FCS said general cleaning and maintenance are underway at all cemeteries under its care, during which they discovered certain graves being used to conceal items such as cloth, tapa, and temporary shelters.

These materials were allegedly placed to mark collection points for contraband, which inmates retrieved during labour programs.

FCS said the removal of such unauthorized items is necessary to maintain security and the integrity of the cemeteries.

“We understand and respect the sentiments of the public, but this exercise is essential for public safety and to uphold the sanctity of these sacred grounds,” the statement read.

Only items approved under the standard grave plan issued by the FCS Cemetery Office are permitted. Any other materials will be removed during the clean-up.

The service thanked the public for their cooperation in ensuring a safe and dignified environment for all.
