Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called on former PM Voreqe Bainimarama to reflect on the pain and unjust treatment he inflicted on some FNPF pensioners in 2012.

In The Fiji Times‘ A Conversation with The PM column, he said while he had forgiven Mr Bainimarama’s decision to cut the payments of some including Mr Rabuka, others may not be so forgiving.

“Moral courage would require acknowledging the suffering that resulted from his actions and having a sense of atonement would at least do great justice to those whose lives were impacted.”

“Since August, 2024, we have backdated pensions and provided some reprieve to those who have been struggling for years,” he said.

“This is one commitment of ensuring that affected pensioners receive what they rightfully deserve.”

Mr Rabuka was responding to letter writer Dewan Chand of Namadi Heights who criticised former PM Voreqe Bainimarama’s attempt to seek gratuity payments despite his past actions that included the FNPF pension cut.

The PM said he respected Mr Chand’s views and urged Mr Bainimarama to reflect on the pain and unjust treatment he inflicted on some FNPF pensioners at the time including Mr Rabuka.

“I lost my entitlement and benefits back then. I was in the village picking coconuts when my letter was delivered to me by some soldiers.

“The letter explained the reasons for the discontinuation of my PM’s pension.

“I knew I did nothing wrong, but I accepted the decision.

“Moral courage would require acknowledging the suffering that resulted from his actions and having a sense of atonement would at least do great justice to those whose lives were impacted.

“I am now guided by the doctrine — let love shine and I have forgiven him.”
