TUI Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has issued a strong warning to the people of Fiji, urging a return to traditional values and unity in the face of rising social problems.
“If we do not return to these foundations, we are at risk of losing our identity,” Ratu Wiliame said.
He said loss of cultural identity, family breakdown and growing drug abuse were signs of communities drifting away from their roots.
“Our traditional ways, our values, our sense of togetherness are slowly fading.”
The former president said drug abuse had worsened over the years as people were no longer afraid to trade and use drugs openly.
“During my three years as president, I witnessed the devastating impact of drug abuse firsthand,” he said.
He said even more disturbing was the use of bluetoothing, or blood transfusion, as a method of getting high.
“This practice is driven by desperation and addiction,” he said.
Although bluetoothing is common in Viti Levu, he said it had now reached the North.
“It is more widespread in Viti Levu compared to the North.
“We cannot turn a blind eye to it.”
To address these problems, Ratu Wiliame said there was a need to rebuild strong family foundations that promote values, guidance and support for young people.
