Police clear religious gathering in Suva to proceed

The Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, has overturned an earlier decision to deny a permit for a religious gathering scheduled to take place in Suva tomorrow.

The organiser has now been advised that the event can proceed, said Fiji Police Force.

Police confirmed that, in fact, no permit was legally required as the gathering was not to be held in a public place.

However, Commissioner Tudravu commended the organiser’s decision to apply, saying it demonstrated “a willingness to cooperate with law enforcement” and to comply with the Public Order Act.

Given the large crowd expected, police have requested the organiser’s full cooperation to ensure the safety and security of attendees and to prevent any breach of peace or public order, said Fiji Police.

Authorities reminded that under the Public Order Act, they are empowered to intervene if safety concerns arise.

The Fiji Police Force has apologised for any inconvenience caused by the earlier decision.
