The Fiji National University has rejected the findings of an external review committee that was hired by the Higher Education Commission.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro stated this in Parliament today.

He said the committee commended FNU for its strong emphasis on practical training, teaching quality, and industry partnerships.

“However, the report identified critical weaknesses, including governance issues, gaps in leadership, and inadequate strategic planning, which hinder sustainable growth,” said Mr Radrodro.

“The committee also noted severe funding constraints, with ongoing budget cuts limiting innovation in teaching, research capacity, and infrastructure development.”

Additionally, a disconnect between FNU’s academic programs and industry expectations was highlighted, particularly in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) areas, where insufficient industry input has led to skills gaps among graduates.”

The Education Minister said FNU strongly contested the committee findings, labeling the report as lacking objectivity and based on insufficient evidence.

“The university criticized comments made about its Vice Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor, deans, and senior management as defamatory.”

“FNU further questioned the report’s credibility, citing the absence of clear terms of reference and an undefined methodological framework.”

“The university rejected the report in its current form, stating it does not contribute to its institutional development.”
