A new chapter in Ba’s sporting history began last week with the official opening of the newly redeveloped 4R Stadium (formerly known as Govind Park) followed by an electrifying Skipper Cup match between Suva and Ba.
The upgraded facility was officially opened by the Minister for Housing and Local Government, Hon. Maciu Nalumisa, who described it as a key investment in national development, youth empowerment, and community pride.
The event drew thousands of spectators who gathered to witness the reopening and enjoy the return of top-tier rugby to their hometown.
The stadium now boasts a grandstand seating capacity of 9,000, four spacious changing rooms for teams, a dedicated media room, an administration office, and four broadcasting booths making it one of the most modern and media-friendly venues in the Western Division.
Ba was alive with energy as the crowd welcomed back elite-level rugby after many years. In the first Skipper Cup match to be played at the new stadium, Suva proved too strong for the home team, defeating Ba 35–13 in a fast-paced and physical contest.
Despite the loss, Ba fans were proud to host a major match at their upgraded stadium and welcomed the return of regular competitions to their town.
The match was especially significant as it marked the first time in over 30 years that Suva played in Ba, bringing with it a wave of excitement for local supporters.
Minister Nalumisa told the crowd that the stadium was more than just a sports venue—it was a space that would bring people together, promote healthy living, and create economic opportunities for the local community.
“This stadium is more than just a sporting facility.
“It’s a symbol of unity, pride, and opportunity for our people,” he said.
He also noted that the Government’s investment in infrastructure like 4R Stadium would boost tourism, create local jobs, and inspire the next generation of athletes.
The opening also included cultural performances and entertainment that showcased Ba’s community spirit, making the day a full celebration beyond just sport.
With its new look and facilities, 4R Stadium is set to host major rugby, football, and community events in the months ahead, further cementing Ba’s place as a proud sporting town in Fiji.
