The Great Council of Chiefs is engaging provincial councils to identify land-based economic opportunities in agriculture and eco-tourism.

While providing outcomes of the implementation of the GCC Regulations 2024, iTaukei Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu said one outcome was the National Cocoa Industry Revitalisation Policy in partnership with the Agriculture Ministry.

“The poverty alleviation project in Rewa is supported through cooperation with the government of China,” he said.

“The ongoing bilateral engagements with development partners to support iTaukei economic well-being, and the formation of the GCC economic subcommittee which is now advising on the community-based enterprise model leveraging traditional land ownership.”

Mr Vasu said the GCC was also committed to programs focused on reviving the iTaukei language and traditional craft and oral knowledge.

“Additionally, the GCC is supporting the integration of iTaukei values and history into the national school curriculum, ensuring young Fijians grow up grounded in their heritage.

“The implementation of GCC Regulation 2024 has led to real and measurable outcomes.

“The GCC has been restored as a functional, resourced and forward-looking institution.

“It is now contributing meaningfully to iTaukei governance, economic participations and cultural revitalisation, all the while strengthening intergenerational leadership and community.”
