Repairs and maintenance have begun at the Suva Municipal Market, which will also take in the fish market section.

This is confirmed by Suva City Council CEO Tevita Boseiwaqa after concerns were raised by vendors on the poor condition of the fish market.

He said maintenance on the roof of the market building has started.

“We are starting from the roof, and then we’re going down,” Mr Boseiwaqa said.

“It’s part of our broader efforts to improve the conditions for vendors and customers alike.”

He said cameras would be installed around the market to address the issue of goods being stolen at night.

Recently a vendor claimed he lost 48 bundles of fish to thieves, the first time such an incident had happened to him.

Mr Boseiwaqa said the council has also begun installing surveillance cameras.

“Right now, they’ve started working on the cables, and these are the modern ones (cameras).

“It will be very hard to hide from them.”
