In late 2027, Malta will host the 8th Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG), bringing over 1,150 athletes aged 14-18 from 74 countires and territories to compete across twin islands of Malta and Gozo.
The Games will feature eight sports in total – Athletics & Para Athletics, Netball, Squash, Swimming & Para Swimming, Triathlon, Weightlifting, plus first-time CYG disciplines Sailing and Water Polo. The Games will also feature the largest Para programme in CYG history, including Para Swimming for the first time.
Dr. Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, said, “The Commonwealth Youth Games are more than a captivating celebration of sport; they are a transformative experience for young athletes. Those that compete are the stars of tomorrow and the voices of today, changemakers who will shape the future of our Movement. We look forward to being on the beautiful island of Malta in 2027.”
Fiji has a modest but proud history in the Commonwealth Youth Games, having competed in several editions since the inaugural event in 2000. To date, Fiji has secured a total of 14 medals across these Games: three gold, four silver and seven bronze medals, primarily in Swimming, Rugby Sevens and all Gold medals coming from Weightlifting.
Fiji returned with a silver and two bronze medals from the last edition of the TRINBAGO 2023 CYG.
The Malta 2027 Games will offer Fiji’s youth a chance to build on the legacy of the youth focussed 2025 Pacific Mini Games and serves as a critical stepping stone for some of these athletes in the lead up to Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.
FASANOC will advertise for the CYG 2027 Chef de Mission and call for Expressions of Interest from National Federations to register interest in participating at Malta 2027.
