The Fiji Meteorological Service has a heavy rain alert for the southern and eastern parts of Viti Levu, including Momi, Sigatoka, Korolevu, Serua-Namosi, Navua, Suva, Nausori, Naitasiri, Interior Ra, Rakiraki and Tailevu North, as well as Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups.
This alert follows the approach of a trough of low pressure, expected to begin affecting the country later today, bringing cloud cover, showers, and widespread rain through to Wednesday.
According to the latest forecast issued at 3am today, affected areas can expect occasional rain, which may become heavy at times, along with isolated thunderstorms, particularly from the west as the system moves across the country.
Possible impacts includes flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas, especially where rainfall becomes intense over short periods.
There will be reduced visibility during heavy rain and thunderstorms could pose hazards for motorists and pedestrians.
Communities living near streams, rivers, and creeks are urged to exercise caution and remain alert to rapidly changing weather conditions.
