A request to remove the constitutional section on equality and non-discrimination was made during consultations in a village up North, according to HIV advocate Temo Sasau.
Mr Sasau said a villager wanted this part of the Constitution scrapped after requesting that the names and photos of people with HIV be printed and distributed among the community.
“He asked for their pictures to be posted in town so people could be cautious,” he said.
While raising awareness of the virus at Nakama Village, Mr Sasau said this mindset was exactly the reason many people living with the virus do not feel safe coming forward with their status.
“Coming out with HIV is not easy.
“People will distance themselves from you, spit at you and talk about you.”
Mr Sasau, who lives with HIV himself, said he has faced similar discrimination, and he urged people to change how they view and treat others.
“Only when we change our mindset about people living with HIV will more people come forward to get tested.”
