AN upset occurred in the Vodafone Deans under-17 playoffs as Queen Victoria School was defeated by Shri Guru Nanak Khalsa College from Labasa by a narrow margin of 27-28, at Buckhurst Park ground one yesterday.
This surprising result left QVS fans and spectators shocked and disappointed.
Team manager, Anamaria Raiyaki, expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating that they had come with a clear goal in mind – to secure a win.
The boys from Labasa were well aware of the importance of the match, knowing that a loss would mean the end of their campaign for this year.
“We came with a goal to win, and we worked hard in the field to get it,” said Raiyaki.
“Preparation was tough coming all the way from Labasa, the boys knew this is an important game, if we lose its over, we have to wait for another chance next year, the boys really gave their all in the field, and getting this win is a big achievement for the school and our families back home.”
She adds the team’s mantra before the match was to leave everything on the field, and their hard work paid off.
Raiyaki commended the boys for their dedication and effort, emphasising the significance of the win.
“The team’s message before the match is to give it all in the field, we have worked extra hard for this game, and I’m thankful for the boys for the win.
“QVS as we all know they are a champion school, but we don’t underestimate any team, we came to play rugby and to get the win.”
She also noted areas for improvement, such as lineouts and tackling, which they would work on before the upcoming quarter-final match.
Raiyaki thanked the parents, school, and supporters for their unwavering support and attendance at the match.
Their cheers and encouragement undoubtedly boosted the team’s morale and performance on the field.
